‘Doris’ frequents my store on an extremely regular basis. She has recently moved to Auckland, and found the relocation to ‘The Big Smoke’ a little daunting. Fortunately, she found a likeminded knitting pal and my extremely dangerous wool store.
‘Doris’ is a tad younger than me. The first time she called into the store she had her extremely short cropped hair coloured an amazing soft pink. She wears the most enormous black rimmed spectacles and dresses in an edgy, eclectic and enviously stylish manner. She is also incredibly kind, patient and generous. All her knitting projects, mostly baby garments, hats and bootees, are made with the sole intention of giving them away. Her knitting is immaculate, she is a perfectionist and cannot tolerate the slightest mistake or uneven stitch. Doris also buys my most luxurious and most expensive wool…I love Doris!
Recently Doris left the store with a clutch of classic cream baby alpaca. She had had a request for a simple, chunky garter stitch scarf. We had a great deal of fun playing around with wool combinations and finally came up with a design using three strands of yarn worked on great big needles. It was a project that would be completed in a matter of hours. That evening, having grabbed an identical bundle of wool and set to work on my own version of the scarf.
Now… Doris is not actually called Doris. Her real name is Lynn but her ‘friends’ have given her the moniker in honour of her new hobby! They obviously believe that knitting is an activity for very senior ladies, those who stereotypically reside in care homes, who suck on boiled sweets and lament about the youth of today. Yeah right!
We've paired the Doris scarf with our 'Charlies Angels' jumper....If you want to do the same, follow this link to see our free pattern for the jumper!
