Your First Top-Down Garment Workshop
Your First Top-Down Garment Workshop
Have you always wanted to knit a sweater but felt unsure where to start? This five-week workshop is designed to guide confident beginners through their very first top-down garment in a supportive, small-group setting.
Over five structured sessions, you’ll learn not just what to do, but why garments are constructed the way they are. You’ll gain a clear understanding of sizing, gauge, shaping, and fit — so you can confidently knit future garments long after this workshop ends.
With expert guidance, fitting support, and plenty of time for questions, you’ll build both skills and confidence as your garment takes shape.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to have knitted a garment before?
No. This workshop is designed for confident beginners who can knit and purl but haven’t yet made a top down sweater or garment.
What skills do I need?
You should be comfortable casting on, knitting, and purling. We’ll guide you through the garment-specific techniques step by step.
Do I need to finish my garment during the workshop?
Not necessarily. Most participants will have their garment well underway, and some may finish. The goal is to understand the construction and gain confidence to complete it independently.
What patterns can I choose?
Sweaters, slipovers, and tees are all welcome. We provide a recommended list of beginner-friendly top-down patterns, and you’re welcome to check with us if you’d like guidance and would like to choose your pattern before the workshop starts.
Do I need to buy my yarn from Wild & Woolly Yarns?
Participants receive 10% off all materials purchased for the workshop. You’re welcome to bring yarn from elsewhere, but we would need to ensure you choose the correct yarn for your project and to match your pattern.
What happens if I miss a session?
While we recommend attending all sessions to get the most from the workshop, we’ll provide guidance on what to work on so you can stay on track.
How much knitting will I need to do between sessions?
Some knitting between sessions will be essential to help you stay aligned with the group. The more you knit, the more progress you’ll see — but speed is not the goal.
