Construction and skills
Begin with a foundation chain and crochet around both sides to form a rectangle. Work joined rounds, turning after each round so both sides of the blanket look the same. Treble clusters and chain spaces build the fabric, with increases at the corners.
Skill level: confident beginner. Techniques include chains, trebles, slip stitches, working around a foundation chain, turning joined rounds and making corner clusters. British crochet terms are used throughout.
Finished size
Approximately 60 × 75 cm. Changing the size will change the yarn required.
Before starting with Iride
The white leader at each end of an Iride cake is waste yarn. Remove it before starting a centre pull, or stop before it when working from the outside. Do not knit or crochet the white leader into your project.
Yarn requirements
The original recommended Sesia Iride 4ply organic cotton provides 450 m per 125 g. Work with one strand throughout.
| Project | Iride (m) |
|---|---|
| One blanket | 900 |
Approximate allowance converted from the PDF's quantity at the verified 450 m per cake. Allow for swatching and any changes to size or tension.
Tension
The PDF states that exact tension is not important. Your crochet tension affects the finished size and yarn use. Make a swatch, wash and dry it, and check the fabric before starting.
Hook and notions
- 3 mm crochet hook.
- Tapestry needle for finishing.
