Baby Cardigan & Hat – Naturally K3039
A stocking-stitch cardigan and matching hat with neat ribbed edges. Both are knitted flat from the bottom up and seamed. The cardigan has separate back, fronts and sleeves, with picked-up front bands and neckband; the hat has a shaped crown and back seam.

Ages are approximate. Choose the cardigan using chest measurements and check the hat measurement separately.

Use Naturally New Zealand Merino 4ply, held single. The allowances below are for the cardigan and hat set, converted using 178 metres per 50 g. Quantities are approximate.

Tension
28 stitches × 36 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch on 3.25 mm needles. Wash and dry a swatch before measuring and adjust needle size if needed.
Needles and notions
- 3.00 mm and 3.25 mm knitting needles.
- Stitch holders, stitch markers and a tapestry needle for seaming.
- Buttons: 3 for newborn, 4 for 3 months, 4 for 6–9 months, or 5 for 12–18 months.
Skills and preparation
You will use ribbing, stocking stitch, increases and decreases, neckline shaping, picked-up bands, buttonholes and seaming. This suits a knitter ready to practise baby garment construction and finishing.
