A cabled sweater with ribbed edges and a garter-stitch shawl collar, plus a coordinating cabled hat. Both are knitted flat from the bottom up and seamed. The sweater's collar is worked from the held front-neck stitches, shaped to fit around the neckline and sewn into place.

Yarn requirements
Our approved replacement is Naturally New Zealand Merino 4ply, held single. The table gives estimated equivalent-metre allowances for the garment and hat together, retaining the original Omana Print total length of 450 metres per 100 g. New Zealand Merino 4ply supplies 178 metres per 50 g; choose enough yarn to cover the total metres shown.
| Sweater size | NZ Merino 4ply – estimated |
|---|---|
| 6 months | 450 m |
| 9–12 months | 900 m |
| 18 months | 900 m |
| 2 years | 900 m |
| 3 years | 1,350 m |
These substitution allowances are estimates rather than test-knit quantities. Make a washed and dried swatch to check both stitch and row tension before starting, and allow extra for changes to length or fit. The finished fabric and colour effect will differ from the original photographed yarn.
Tension
28 stitches × 36 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch on 3.25 mm needles. Measure tension in stocking stitch rather than across the cable panels, and adjust needle size as needed.
Needles and notions
- 2.75 mm and 3.25 mm straight knitting needles.
- A cable needle, stitch holders and stitch markers.
- A tapestry needle for sewing up and attaching the collar.
Skills and preparation
This is an intermediate project using six-stitch cable crossings, ribbing, increases, decreases, neckline shaping and seaming. Keep the cable repeat correct while shaping the front. Fit the collar around the neckline without stretching it before sewing it in place.
