Gauge, needles and accessories
Gauge: 18 stitches × 24 rows in the textured pattern on 4.5 mm needles, after washing and blocking = 10 × 10 cm. Knit a swatch in the pattern’s textured stitches, wash and block it, and adjust needle size to achieve the required gauge.
Needles: 4.5 mm circular needles (40, 60, 80 and/or 100 cm); 3 mm circular needles (60 or 80 cm); 3 mm double-pointed needles.
Notions: One 23 cm zip, 4 mm wide.
Wild & Woolly yarn options
Option 1: Single-strand 10ply yarn
Choose African Expressions Harmony 10ply, Inca Spun Alpaca Wool Mix Worsted 10ply or Amano Warmi 10ply. Work your chosen yarn single-stranded, without a mohair companion. These are shop-approved alternatives to the designer’s yarn.
Estimated single-strand yarn requirements
| Size | Harmony, Inca Spun Worsted or Warmi (m) |
|---|---|
| XXS | 1320 |
| XS | 1320–1485 |
| S | 1485 |
| M | 1485 |
| L | 1485–1650 |
| XL | 1650 |
| 2XL | 1650 |
| 3XL | 1650 |
| 4XL | 1815 |
| 5XL | 1815 |
These are equivalent-metre planning estimates, not confirmed designer consumption for these substitutes. The single-strand allowance is converted from the designer’s original single-strand yarn quantities at 165 metres per 100 g. It is the length of your chosen yarn, not a total to split between the three choices.
Harmony supplies 87 metres per sale unit, Inca Spun Alpaca Wool Mix Worsted 100 metres and Amano Warmi 150 metres. Round up to whole sale units and allow extra for swatching or added length.
Option 2: 8ply yarn with 2ply mohair
Hold one strand of Sandnes Garn Peer Gynt or Sandnes Garn Double Sunday together with one strand of 2ply mohair. Choose Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair, Naturally Pacific Lace 2ply, African Expressions Hope 2ply Mohair or Sesia Vivienne 2ply Silk Mohair as the companion. These are shop-approved combinations replacing the original companion yarn.
Estimated held-together yarn requirements
| Size | Peer Gynt or Double Sunday (m) | Chosen 2ply mohair (m) |
|---|---|---|
| XXS | 1183 | 1200 |
| XS | 1274 | 1200–1600 |
| S | 1365 | 1600 |
| M | 1456 | 1600 |
| L | 1456 | 1600 |
| XL | 1547 | 1600 |
| 2XL | 1638 | 1600 |
| 3XL | 1638 | 2000 |
| 4XL | 1729 | 2000 |
| 5XL | 1729 | 2000 |
Each column is the allowance for that individual strand; do not add the mohair metres to the main-yarn quantity. These equivalent-metre estimates use the designer’s Peer Gynt quantities at 91 metres per 50 g for either main yarn, and convert the original companion at 400 metres per 50 g. They are not confirmed designer consumption for the substitutes.
Peer Gynt supplies 91 metres per sale unit and Double Sunday 108 metres. Tynn Silk Mohair and Hope supply 212 metres, Pacific Lace 200 metres and Vivienne 210 metres per sale unit. Round each component up to whole units and allow extra for swatching or added length. Swatch both strands together.
Swatch in the pattern’s cable and textured stitches, then wash and block before measuring. Match 18 stitches × 24 rows per 10 cm and check the fabric’s structure and drape. Yarn substitutions can change fabric, fit and consumption even when the stitch gauge matches.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dagmar Zipper Sweater a full-zip cardigan?
No. It is a pullover with a 23 cm zip at the neck. The main body is worked in the round beneath the opening.
How are the Dagmar Zipper Sweater zip edges finished?
The opening has double-knitted front edges, with a ribbed neck edge worked at the end. This is a separate finishing stage from knitting the main body.
