Gauge, needles and accessories
Gauge: 18 stitches × 24 rows in the textured pattern on 4.5 mm needles, after washing and blocking = 10 × 10 cm. Knit a swatch in the pattern’s textured stitches, wash and block it, and adjust needle size to achieve the required gauge.
Needles: 4.5 mm circular needles (40, 60, 80 and/or 100 cm); 3.5 mm circular needles (60 or 80 cm); 3 mm circular needles (60 or 80 cm); 3 mm double-pointed needles.
Notions: One 23 cm zip, 4 mm wide.
Wild & Woolly yarn options
Choose African Expressions Harmony 10ply, Inca Spun Alpaca Wool Mix Worsted 10ply or Amano Warmi 10ply. Work your chosen yarn single-stranded, without a mohair companion. These are shop-approved alternatives to the designer’s yarn.
Estimated single-strand yarn requirements
| Size | Harmony, Inca Spun Worsted or Warmi (m) |
|---|---|
| XS | 1485 |
| S | 1650 |
| M | 1650 |
| L | 1815 |
| XL | 1815 |
| 2XL | 1980 |
| 3XL | 1980 |
| 4XL | 1980 |

These are equivalent-metre planning estimates, not confirmed designer consumption for these substitutes. The single-strand allowance is converted from the designer’s original single-strand yarn quantities at 165 metres per 100 g. It is the length of your chosen yarn, not a total to split between the three choices.
Harmony supplies 87 metres per sale unit, Inca Spun Alpaca Wool Mix Worsted 100 metres and Amano Warmi 150 metres. Round up to whole sale units and allow extra for swatching or added length.
Swatch in the pattern’s cable and textured stitches, then wash and block before measuring. Match 18 stitches × 24 rows per 10 cm and check the fabric’s structure and drape. Yarn substitutions can change fabric, fit and consumption even when the stitch gauge matches.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dagmar Zipper Sweater Man a beginner pattern?
PetiteKnit rates it 5 out of 5. It combines cable and textured knitting with picked-up shoulders and sleeves, double-knitted zip edges and zip installation.
Does the Dagmar Zipper Sweater Man length include the collar?
No. Its centre-back length excludes the neck edge. Use that measurement when deciding whether to alter the body length, and allow extra yarn for added length.
