Striped Sweater & Hat Knitting Pattern – K440

A classic striped sweater and matching hat for babies and young children, with separate instructions for 4ply and DK/8ply. The sweater has a small buttoned neck opening for easy dressing, and both pieces are worked flat.

Yarn requirements

Work with one strand. For the 4ply version use Baby Haven 4ply, now sold as New Zealand Merino 4ply, at 178 m per 50 g. For the DK version use Magic Garden Classic NZ 8ply Merino at 138 m per 50 g.

Construction and skill level

The back, front and sleeves are knitted flat in striped stocking stitch with garter and rib trims. The front opening and neckband are finished after the shoulders are joined. The hat is knitted flat, shaped at the crown and seamed. An intermediate project for knitters comfortable changing colours, shaping, picking up stitches and seaming.

Needles, notions and gauge

  • 4ply: 3 mm and 3.25 mm straight needles; 28 stitches and 36 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 3.25 mm needles
  • DK/8ply: 3.75 mm and 4 mm straight needles; 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 4 mm needles
