Poncho Knitting Pattern – K3026

A loose-fitting baby and children’s poncho with a ribbed lower border, garter-stitch side edges and buttoned sides. Naturally K3026 includes six sizes from newborn to approximately four years.

Construction and skill guidance

The front and back are knitted flat from the lower edge, with shaped shoulders and neckline. The neckband is picked up and worked flat after joining one shoulder, then the remaining shoulder and neckband seam are sewn. Buttons along the sides fasten through buttonholes worked into the front edges.

Suggested skill guidance: Some knitting experience is helpful. You’ll use knit and purl stitches, ribbing, buttonholes, neck shaping, holding and picking up stitches, and shoulder seaming.

Sizes and finished measurements

Ages are approximate. Compare the finished circumference and back-neck length with a suitable garment; this is a loose poncho rather than a fitted sweater.

Approx. age To fit chest (cm) Finished circumference (cm) Back-neck length (cm)
Newborn 36 53 20
3 months 41 59 23
6–9 months 46 66 25
12–18 months 51 72 30
2–3 years 56 78 34
3–4 years 61 85 38

Yarn choices

Original yarn: Opal Wintersonne DK/8ply, worked with a single strand. We have retained this as the original pattern yarn.

Alternative yarn: New Zealand Merino Prints 8ply, also worked with a single strand. Its printed colours will produce a different effect from the Wintersonne sample.

Yarn requirements

Approx. age Wintersonne (m) NZ Merino Prints estimate (m)
Newborn 320 320
3 months 320 320
6–9 months 320 320
12–18 months 640 640
2–3 years 640 640
3–4 years 640 640

The Wintersonne allowances are converted from the original pattern quantities using the supplier’s stated 320 m per 150 g. The NZ Merino Prints figures are equivalent-metre substitution estimates using the same total length; this yarn supplies 138 m per 50 g. Choose one yarn option, not both. Allow extra for swatching or length changes, and do not transfer the original purchasing quantities directly between yarns.

Tension

22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 4 mm needles. Wash and block a swatch in your chosen yarn, check both stitch and row tension, and adjust needle size if needed before starting.

Needles and notions

  • 3.75 mm and 4 mm straight needles, as listed in the pattern
  • Stitch holders and markers
  • 4 buttons for newborn, 3 months and 6–9 months; 6 buttons for 12–18 months, 2–3 years and 3–4 years
  • Tapestry needle for seams and finishing

The original sample is photographed in Opal Wintersonne shade 11434. With a printed yarn, begin each new length from the same end of the yarn supply for a consistent colour sequence. The colour effect varies with size.

Frequently asked questions

Are the buttons on the shoulder?

No. The shoulders are seamed; the buttons fasten the front and back along the side edges.

Is the poncho worked in the round?

No. The front, back and picked-up neckband are worked flat. You do not need to knit a circular yoke.

Can I use NZ Merino Prints 8ply?

Yes. It is our approved alternative to Wintersonne. Follow the estimated metreage for your size and check the pattern tension with a washed and blocked swatch. Expect a different printed colour effect.
