Construction and skills
The front, back and sleeves are worked flat as separate pieces. The shoulder bands overlap and fasten with buttons, and the sleeves and side seams are sewn together.
The designer describes the jumper as easy to knit. You will use knit and purl stitches, increases and decreases, holding stitches, picking up neckline stitches, buttonholes and mattress-stitch seams. Read the finishing instructions before starting.
Sizes, measurements and yarn requirements
| Approx. age | Yarn weight | To fit chest (cm) | Finished chest (cm) | Back length (cm) | Underarm sleeve (cm) | Yarn (m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0–3 months | 4ply | 36 | 40 | 26 | 15 | 450 |
| 3–6 months | 4ply | 40 | 45 | 29 | 17 | 675 |
| 6–12 months | 8ply | 46 | 51 | 34 | 20 | 400 |
| 18–30 months | 8ply | 50 | 55 | 39 | 24 | 500 |
Choose by chest measurements; ages are approximate. Finished measurements include room over the body. The pattern uses 4ply only for the first two sizes and 8ply only for the last two; it does not offer every size in both weights.
Yarn and swatching
The metre allowances are converted from the original pattern's specified yarn: 225 m per sale unit for 4ply and 100 m per sale unit for 8ply. These are purchasing allowances rather than measured consumption. Different yarns, tension or added length may change how much you need.
Choose yarn that produces the required fabric at the tension below. Make a washed and blocked swatch before starting, and ask Wild & Woolly for help with a stocked alternative if needed.
Needles and tension
- 4ply: 3.25 mm needles; 28 stitches and 36 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch.
- 8ply: 4 mm needles; 20 stitches and 30 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch.
- You will also need stitch holders, a sewing-up needle and buttons for the shoulder fastening. Check the pattern's fastening layout before choosing buttons.
