Baby Crossover Jacket & Hat Knitting Pattern — Naturally K681
A cosy crossover jacket and matching hat for little ones, with stocking-stitch fabric, garter-stitch edges and fold-back sleeve cuffs. Choose printed merino for colour that develops as you knit, or a solid shade for a classic finish.
Construction and skill guidance
The jacket is knitted flat in one piece, beginning at the lower back. Stitches are cast on for the sleeves, then the work divides at the neck so each sleeve and front can be completed. A garter-stitch edging is picked up around the fronts and back neck; side and sleeve seams finish the jacket. The hat is knitted flat from the garter-stitch brim upwards, with crown decreases and a back seam.
Intermediate — increases, decreases, shaping, buttonholes, picking up stitches and seaming. One-piece construction still requires seams.
Sizes and fit
Choose by chest measurements; age labels are approximate. Sleeve measurements are given with the cuffs unfolded.

Yarn requirements
Choose either approved alternative: Naturally New Zealand Merino Prints 8ply for printed colour, or Naturally New Zealand Merino 8ply for a solid shade. Both provide approximately 138 m per 50 g and are worked with one strand.
Approximate combined allowance for one jacket and matching hat. The leaflet does not give separate allowances for the two pieces.
| Size | NZ Merino Prints 8ply (m) | NZ Merino 8ply (m) |
|---|---|---|
| Newborn | 315 | 315 |
| 3 months | 315 | 315 |
| 6–9 months | 420 | 420 |
| 12–18 months | 525 | 525 |
These are equivalent-metre substitution estimates, calculated from the original pattern allowances using 105 m per 50 g for the original yarn. Do not transfer the original ball counts to the replacement yarns. The two columns show alternative choices, not yarns to combine. Allow extra for swatching; changes to gauge, length or fabric can change consumption.
Gauge and preparation
22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm over stocking stitch using 4 mm needles. Knit, wash and block a swatch before beginning, then adjust needle size to match both stitch and row gauge. Check the fabric is suitable for the project; equivalent metres do not guarantee identical fabric or yarn use.
Needles and notions
- 3.75 mm and 4 mm straight needles
- One decorative outer button and one plain button for the inside fastening
- Stitch holders, markers and a yarn needle for seaming

Frequently asked questions
Is the one-piece jacket seamless?
No. It is knitted in one piece from the lower back, then the sleeve and side seams are sewn.
Does the yarn table include the hat?
Yes. The metres cover the jacket and matching hat together, using either yarn option.
Why are two buttons needed?
One fastens the outer crossover front and the plain button secures the inner front.
