Little Granny Hexagon Cardigan Crochet Pattern — Naturally K3001
A baby cardigan built from two granny-style crochet hexagons, with flowing gradient colour, a collar and neat cuffs. The pattern uses British crochet terms throughout.
Construction and skill guidance
Each hexagon begins with a magic ring and grows in joined rounds. Fold the hexagons into half T-shapes, then join the centre back and shoulders with slip stitches. Add the hem, cuffs and collar. Intermediate crochet: magic rings, treble clusters, joining, shaping through the hexagon structure and finishing.
Sizes and fit
| Size | To fit chest (cm) |
|---|---|
| 3 months | 40 |
| 6 months | 43 |
| 12 months | 46 |
These are body chest measurements to fit, not finished cardigan circumferences. The leaflet does not state finished chest or garment length measurements. Choose by chest measurement and check your crochet tension.
Before starting with Iride
The white leader at each end of an Iride cake is waste yarn. Remove it before a centre pull, or stop before it when working from the outside. Do not knit or crochet the white leader into your project.
Yarn requirements
The original recommended Sesia Iride 4ply organic cotton provides approximately 450 m per 125 g cake. Work with one strand.
| Size | Iride (m) |
|---|---|
| 3 months | 450 |
| 6 months | 900 |
| 12 months | 900 |
Approximate allowance for one cardigan, converted from the leaflet’s quantities at the verified 450 m per cake. Allow extra for swatching or adjustments.
Crochet tension and preparation
Six groups of three trebles and one chain across, and 10 rows, measure 10 cm using a 3.25 mm hook. Terms are British: TR means treble and DC means double crochet.
Wash and gently block a crochet swatch before starting. Adjust hook size to match the pattern tension and allow extra yarn for swatching.
Hook and notions
3.25 mm crochet hook and a tapestry needle. Two buttons may be used to secure the folded front lapels; this is an optional finishing detail.

Frequently asked questions
Should the hexagons lie flat while I crochet?
No. The leaflet explains that they will not lie flat as they grow. Their shape allows them to fold into the cardigan halves.
Are the two buttons a front fastening?
No. The optional buttons hold the folded-down lapels, one on each side.
