Sweet Pink Cardigan & Beanie with Fair Isle – Naturally K3017
A little colourwork makes this cardigan and matching beanie a lovely project for a baby or growing toddler. Moss-stitch edges frame a charted Fair Isle yoke, with a matching motif around the beanie.
Construction and pattern details
The cardigan is worked from the bottom up. Knit the fronts and back together flat to the armholes, work the sleeves in the round, then join them to the body for a shaped colourwork yoke worked flat. Pick up the front bands and neckband afterwards and close the underarm openings. The beanie is knitted in the round with a shaped crown.
Designer: Naturally. Yarn weight: 4ply. Skill guidance: intermediate; best for knitters comfortable reading a colourwork chart, managing stranded floats, decreasing and picking up stitches.
Sizes and finished measurements
Sizes are shown as printed in the leaflet’s first-page chart. The finished-garment measurement is reproduced under the leaflet’s own heading; it is not a body-size measurement. The leaflet does not give a finished beanie circumference.
| Size | Finished garment (cm) | Buttons* |
|---|---|---|
| 3 months | 50 | 6 |
| 6–9 months | 56 | 6 |
| 12–18 months | 62 | 6 |
| 2 years | 68 | 6 |
| 3–4 years | 74 | 7 |
*Button totals follow the actual buttonhole instructions: five front-band buttonholes for the first four sizes, six for the largest size, plus one neckband buttonhole in every size. These totals differ from the materials list.
Yarn requirements
Use Rosarios 4 Meia 4ply for the main colour and contrast colour 1, and Rosarios 4 Meia Print 4ply for contrast colour 2. Choose a clear contrast so the charted motifs show well.
| Size | Main colour (m) | Contrast 1 (m) | Contrast 2 (m) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 months | 555 | 185 | 185 |
| 6–9 months | 555 | 185 | 185 |
| 12–18 months | 555 | 185 | 185 |
| 2 years | 740 | 185 | 185 |
| 3–4 years | 740 | 185 | 185 |
These approximate allowances are for the cardigan and beanie together; the leaflet does not split them by item. They are converted from the original quantities using the verified 185 m per yarn unit for both ranges. Work with a single strand; Fair Isle carries separate colours, rather than holding two strands together throughout.
Gauge
26 stitches × 35 rows = 10 × 10 cm in stocking stitch on 3.50 mm needles. Make a washed and blocked swatch before starting, and check your stranded colourwork does not tighten the fabric.
Needles and notions
- 3.00 mm needles for the edges and bands; 3.50 mm needles for the main fabric and colourwork, following the actual knitting instructions.
- Circular needles with a 60 cm cord for the cardigan, plus double-pointed needles in both sizes for the sleeves and beanie. Choose suitable needles and cord length if using magic loop.
- Buttons: 6 / 6 / 6 / 6 / 7, in the size order above, including the neckband button.
- One stitch holder; 4 / 4 / 5 / 5 / 5 stitch markers; tapestry needle.
Frequently asked questions
Is the cardigan seamless?
The body is worked in one piece flat and the sleeves in the round, but the underarm openings still need to be closed. The beanie is worked in the round.
Are there corrections for K3017?
Yes. The supplier has corrected the yoke stitch counts. Read the official K3017 corrections alongside your leaflet before knitting the yoke.
How many buttons do I need?
Allow six buttons for each of the first four sizes and seven for the 3–4 years size. This includes the separate neckband buttonhole and follows the knitting instructions rather than the materials list.
