Crew Neck or Boat Neck Sweater & Hat – Naturally K3038
A stocking-stitch sweater with a choice of crew neck or boat neck, plus a matching moss-edged hat. The sweater is knitted flat from the bottom up in separate back, front and sleeve pieces, then seamed. The hat is also knitted flat, with a shaped crown and back seam.
Sizes and fit
Six sizes cover newborn to approximately 4 years. Choose by chest measurement; the finished sweater has approximately 5 cm of ease. The lengths below are the pattern's measurements to the back neck.

Yarn requirements
Our approved replacement yarn is Naturally New Zealand Merino 8ply, held single. The following are estimated equivalent-metre allowances for one sweater and matching hat. They retain the original pattern's total yarn length, calculated using 138 metres per 50 g of the original Classic DK; the replacement also supplies 138 metres per 50 g.

These are substitution estimates rather than a test-knit guarantee. Make a washed and dried swatch to check both stitch and row tension, and allow extra yarn for changes to length or fit.
Tension
22 stitches × 30 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch on 4.00 mm needles. Use the needle size needed to achieve this tension after washing and drying your swatch.
Needles and notions
- 3.25 mm, 3.75 mm and 4.00 mm knitting needles.
- Stitch holders, stitch markers and a tapestry needle for sewing up.
Skills and preparation
You will use stocking stitch, moss stitch, increases, decreases and seaming. The crew-neck version adds neck shaping and a picked-up neckband; the boat-neck version has matching front and back pieces with moss-stitch neck edges. This is suitable for a confident beginner ready to practise a seamed garment.
