Garter Stitch Baby Jacket & Hat Knitting Pattern – K3068
Garter stitch gives this Naturally baby jacket its softly ridged texture, with grown-on sleeves, folded-back cuffs and a button front. K3068 includes a matching beanie for the first four sizes. The sample uses New Zealand Merino Prints DK/8ply, shade 6711.
Construction and skills
The jacket is worked flat from the lower back, with stitches cast on for the sleeves. After shaping the back neck, the fronts and sleeves are completed separately. Sleeve edges are joined with a three-needle cast-off and the side seams are sewn. The beanie is knitted flat from the brim up, shaped at the crown and seamed at the back.
Suggested skill level: intermediate. Techniques include garter stitch, slipped edges, shaping, buttonholes, picking up stitches, a three-needle cast-off and seaming. Circular needles hold the width of the jacket; the pieces are worked back and forth.
Sizes and fit
The jacket has six sizes, from Prem to 3–4 years. The hat covers Prem, 0–3 months, 6–9 months and 12–18 months only, as confirmed by Wild & Woolly. No hat instructions are supplied for the two largest jacket sizes. Ages are a guide; choose the jacket by the pattern's to-fit chest measurements below.
