Baby & Toddler Vest & Hat Knitting Pattern – K3085
A V-neck stocking stitch vest and matching rib-brimmed hat in Opal Wirbelwind 4ply. Naturally K3085 includes five vest sizes from 6 months to 3 years and three hat sizes. The samples use shades 11471 and 11473.
Construction and skills
The vest is knitted flat from the bottom up in separate back and front pieces, with shaped underarms and a V-neck. The neckband and armhole bands are picked up and worked flat, then seams are joined. The hat is knitted flat from its ribbed brim to the shaped crown and seamed at the back.
Suggested skill level: intermediate. Techniques include ribbing, stocking stitch, neck and armhole shaping, centred V-neck decreases, picking up stitches and seaming.

Yarn requirements
Use Opal Wirbelwind 4ply with a single strand. Approximate set allowances below are calculated at 425 m per 100 g from the PDF's five vest-size quantities. The PDF does not provide separate vest and hat allowances.

Work each ball from the same end for consistency in the printed colour sequence. Colour placement varies with size and starting point.
Tension
28 stitches and 36 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch on 3.25 mm needles. Wash and dry a swatch before measuring; adjust needle size to achieve tension.

Pattern clarifications
For the three hat sizes, work 10, 12 and 12 additional rib rows after the first two rows: 12, 14 and 14 rib rows in total. For the largest vest size, both back shoulders finish with 18 stitches. These clarifications apply when following the original PDF; the PDF itself is unchanged.

Are the vest and hat knitted in the round?
No. Both are knitted flat and finished with seams; the vest bands are also worked flat.
Do the hat and vest have the same sizes?
The vest has five sizes, approximately 6 months to 3 years. The hat has three sizes: 6–9 months, 12–18 months and 2–3 years. Choose using the separate measurement tables.
How much yarn do I need?
The set allowance is 425 m for each of the first three vest sizes and 850 m for each of the two largest sizes. Separate project allowances are not supplied.
