Two 10–12ply cowl designs: a country cable cowl and a simpler garter-stitch alternative.

Construction
Both cowls are worked flat, then joined into a loop.
Yarn choices
Use a single strand of 10–12ply yarn. The two designs have different metre allowances; yarn and needles are purchased separately.

Metre allowances are approximate. Where the original gives purchasing quantities rather than used metres, these have been converted using its stated yarn length. Swatch, wash and block before starting; allow extra for length changes and differences in tension.
Tension
The source pattern does not state a numerical tension. Check the fabric and drape with a swatch.
Needles and notions
5.5 mm needles and a wool needle for joining; the cable version also needs a cable needle.
Before you begin
The cable version uses cable crossings as well as knit and purl stitches. Choose the garter version for a simpler project.

Can I make a cowl without cables using this pattern?
Yes. A simple garter-stitch cowl is included and uses approximately 400 m, compared with 600 m for the cable version.
