Sycamore Sweater — PetiteKnit knitting pattern

A top-down sweater with asymmetrical stripes shaped using Japanese short rows. Its slanting colour sections give the design a distinctive graphic effect, finished with a turtleneck.

English printed pattern booklet, posted to you. Yarn, needles, notions and the finished item are not included. This is not a PDF download.

Shop yarn options

Choose one complete option for both the main colour and contrast stripes. These are approved shop alternatives with metre estimates; the fabric and colour effect will differ from the original sample.

Option 1 — 10ply with mohair

Use one strand of 10ply wool with one strand of 2ply mohair throughout. A stocked combination is African Expressions Harmony with Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair. Choose main and contrast colours and buy each component separately.

Size Main 10ply — estimate (m) Main mohair — estimate (m) Stripe 10ply — estimate (m) Stripe mohair — estimate (m)
XS 625 m 636 m 300 m 212 m
S 625 m 636 m 300 m 212–424 m
M 750 m 848 m 300 m 424 m
L 750 m 848 m 300 m 424 m
XL 875 m 848 m 300 m 424 m
2XL 875–1000 m 848–1060 m 600 m 424 m
3XL 1000 m 1060 m 600 m 424 m

The main 10ply estimate preserves the original main-strand length at 125 m per 50 g. Main and stripe mohair allowances use their separate original quantities at 212 m per 25 g. The original stripe fabric combines three fine colour strands: the shop option replaces those three with one thicker 10ply strand. Its stripe allowance uses one fine strand’s original length at 300 m per 50 g, not the sum of all three strands.

Option 2 — 12ply alone

Use New Zealand Merino 12ply single stranded, without mohair, in a main and contrasting stripe colour.

Size Main 12ply — estimate (m) Stripe 12ply — estimate (m) Combined 12ply — estimate (m)
XS 625 m 300 m 925 m
S 625 m 300 m 925 m
M 750 m 300 m 1050 m
L 750 m 300 m 1050 m
XL 875 m 300 m 1175 m
2XL 875–1000 m 600 m 1475–1600 m
3XL 1000 m 600 m 1600 m

The 12ply allowances use the original main-strand length and the length of one of the three fine stripe strands as starting estimates for the replacement single strand. They are not the combined length of all original strands. African Expressions Harmony is approximately 87 m per 50 g; New Zealand Merino 12ply is approximately 104 m per 50 g.

Neither substitute has been test-knitted for this pattern. Confirm 16 stitches and 24 rows per 10 cm and suitable drape in a washed, blocked swatch, checking both main and stripe fabrics. Allow extra yarn for swatching and changes in length. A single contrast strand produces a different colour effect from the original three-colour marl.

Wash and block a swatch before measuring. Match stitch and row gauge and check the fabric; adjust needle size as needed. Round up to complete sale units and allow extra for swatching or changes in length.

Frequently asked questions

Are the stripes ordinary full rounds?

No. Japanese short rows shape the asymmetrical colour sections; PetiteKnit rates this design 5 out of 5.

Will these shop options reproduce the original marled stripes?

The original stripe fabric blends three fine colour strands held together with mohair. These shop options use one thicker contrast strand, with mohair in option 1 or alone in option 2, so the colour effect will differ. Choose a contrast colour or a suitable variegated yarn; the asymmetrical stripes still follow the pattern’s Japanese short-row shaping.
