Zipper Sweater Junior — PetiteKnit knitting pattern

Knit a half-zip sweater from the top down. A folded rib collar leads into a raglan yoke worked first in rows for the zip opening, then in the round. Body and sleeves continue in the round; a knitted facing encloses the zip for a tidy finish inside.

English printed pattern booklet, posted to you. Yarn, needles, notions and the finished garment are not included. This is not a PDF download.

Sizes and fit

Choose by the recipient’s measured chest and the finished chest table; age labels are a guide.

4–5 76 44
5–6 80 45

Length is measured mid back, excluding the collar.

Gauge, needles and skill

Gauge: 15 stitches × 21 rows in stocking stitch on 5 mm needles = 10 × 10 cm, after washing and blocking.

Additional gauges, per 10 × 10 cm after washing and blocking: Cuffs and hem: 16–17 stitches × 21 rows in 1×1 rib on 5 mm needles. Collar: 21–22 stitches × 24 rows in 1×1 rib on 4 mm needles.

Needles: 5 mm circulars: 40, 60 and 80 cm; two 4 mm circulars: 80 cm; 5 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, or Magic Loop.

Notion: One 35 cm zip, 6 mm wide.

Designer difficulty: 4 out of 5. For knitters comfortable with shaping, knitting in the round, a folded collar and sewing in a zip.

Option 1: 10ply with 2ply mohair

Choose African Expressions Harmony, or Inca Spun Alpaca Wool Mix (Worsted), or Amano Warmi as the main yarn. Hold one strand of 10ply with one strand of 2ply mohair, such as Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair.

Size (years) 10ply main — estimated metres 2ply mohair — estimated metres

4–5 500 424
5–6 600 424–636

10–12 700 636
12–14 900 848

Length-based estimates preserve this edition’s two-component allowance at 100 m per 50 g for the main yarn and 212 m per 25 g for the selected mohair. Buy each component separately; do not combine the columns into one yarn order.

Option 2: 12ply alone

Naturally New Zealand Merino 12ply, worked single-stranded, without mohair.

8–10 625–750
10–12 750
12–14 875–1000
14–16 1000

Length-based estimates preserve the held edition’s heavier single-strand allowance at 125 m per 100 g. The shop yarn is 104 m per 50 g, so this is not a gram-for-gram replacement.

Both shop options are estimates, not test-knitted consumption. Choose one complete option. Wash and block a swatch to match the body gauge of 15 stitches × 21 rows per 10 cm, check the separate rib gauges, and assess drape and collar stability. Allow extra for swatching or length changes and round up to complete sale units.

Frequently asked questions

Which Junior size range does this booklet contain?

This listing follows the held English nine-size edition: 3–4 through 14–16 years. Use its own finished measurements rather than tables from a newer edition or the separate Light Junior pattern.

Which techniques should I be comfortable with?

This edition includes a double cast-on, folded rib collar, German short rows, raglan increases, knitting in the round, Italian cast-off and sewing in an enclosed zip.

Are the two yarn options combined in the same sweater?

No. Choose either one strand of 10ply held with one strand of 2ply mohair, or a single strand of NZ Merino 12ply without mohair. Each option has its own estimated allowance for the nine-size booklet.
