Fingerless mitts with a fern-leaf lace motif, in short and long versions. Position the leaf on top of the hand or at the side.

Construction

Worked flat and seamed with thumb openings; instructions cover both motif positions.

Yarn choices

Use single-strand 8ply yarn. The original pattern states 100 m for short mitts and 125 m for long mitts. Allow extra for the looser or lengthened versions.

Sizes and yarn requirements

The standard size is stated to fit a palm measurement up to 23 cm including the thumb. The pattern also gives a looser option using 3.75 mm needles, with approximately 19 cm circumference and longer finished lengths.

Metre allowances are approximate. Where the original gives purchasing quantities rather than used metres, these have been converted using its stated yarn length. Swatch, wash and block before starting; allow extra for length changes and differences in tension.

Tension

Standard: approximately 23 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch. Looser option: approximately 21 stitches and 28 rows.

Needles and notions

3.5 mm needles, 2 stitch markers and a wool needle. Use 3.75 mm for the looser option if the swatch suits.

Before you begin

Skills include knit and purl stitches, lace increases and decreases, following the fern repeat and seaming.
