Mika Cardigan & Hat Knitting Pattern - 8Ply

A textured 8ply baby and children’s cardigan and matching hat with garter-stitch bands and a choice of one, two or three buttons.

Designer: The Kiwi Stitch & Knit Co. This purchase is a knitting pattern; yarn, needles, accessories and finished items are not included.

Construction

The fronts and back are worked flat together from the lower edge to the armholes, then divided for the upper body. Sleeves are worked separately and sewn in; the shoulders are joined with a three-needle cast-off. The hat can be worked flat or in the round.

Yarn choices

Use DK/8ply yarn, worked with a single strand. Touch Yarns NZ Merino 8ply is a stocked 8ply option to swatch at the pattern tension. Match the metre allowance rather than copying quantities between yarn ranges. The tables use the designer’s explicit approximate metres rather than rounded purchasing quantities.

Fit

The designer recommends 5–8 cm of positive ease at the chest. Ages are a guide; choose by measurements.

Metre allowances are approximate. Where the original gives purchasing quantities rather than used metres, these have been converted using its stated yarn length. Swatch, wash and block before starting; allow extra for length changes and differences in tension.

Tension

22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 4 mm needles.

Needles and notions

4 mm needles throughout the cardigan; 3.5 mm for the hat band and 4 mm circular needles or double-pointed needles for the circular hat method. 7 stitch holders, stitch markers and removable markers; 1–3 buttons, 15–20 mm.

Before you begin

You will use knit and purl stitches, shaping, holding stitches and seaming. Read the finishing instructions before starting. You will also use texture repeats, buttonholes and a three-needle cast-off.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose the number of buttons?

Yes. The pattern gives one-, two- and three-button options.

Are cardigan and hat sizes identical?

They have separate size ranges. Choose each by its measurements; use the combined set allowance in the cardigan table when making the coordinated set.
