Knit a V-neck vest and matching hat in self-patterning Opal Wirbelwind 4ply. Naturally pattern K3085 is worked flat with ribbed edges and stocking-stitch panels; the changing colours do the decorative work.
About the pattern
Work the vest front and back separately, shaping the armholes and V-neck. Join the shoulders, then pick up stitches for the neck and armhole bands before sewing the side seams. The matching hat is knitted flat and seamed. The pattern gives five vest sizes and three hat size groups; use its hat sizing instructions for your chosen vest size.

Choose by finished chest as well as age. The smaller Shopify kit option groups the first three pattern sizes and supplies one ball; the 2–3 years option supplies two balls. These are the pattern’s approximate quantities for the vest and hat set.
Yarn
Opal Wirbelwind 4ply is 75% superwash wool and 25% polyamide, with 425 metres per 100 g ball. Use one strand. For consistent self-patterning, take yarn from the same end of each ball, although colour placement will vary with garment size.
Tension, needles and notions
Target tension is 28 stitches and 36 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 3.25 mm needles. You will also need 3 mm straight needles, stitch holders, markers and a tapestry needle for sewing. Needles and notions are separate.
