Raspberry Cardigan Knitting Pattern – K3076

A classic raglan cardigan with garter stitch front bands and ribbed neck, hem and cuffs. Naturally K3076 uses Chaska Wara DK/8ply, photographed in shade 620, with five buttons worked into the front opening.

Construction and skills

The cardigan is knitted flat from the top down, with raglan increases and front bands worked as you go. Sleeve stitches are held while completing the body, then each sleeve is worked back and forth and seamed underneath. The underarm gaps are closed during finishing.

Suggested skill level: intermediate. Techniques include ribbing, stocking stitch, increases, decreases, buttonholes, holding stitches and seaming. Read the whole pattern before casting on and choose which front band will carry the buttonholes.

Sizes and fit

Choose by chest measurement; ages are approximate. The confirmed finished chest measurements give 5 cm of ease.

Age (years) To fit chest (cm) Finished chest (cm)
2 55 60
3–4 60 65
5–6 65 70
7–8 70 75
9–10 75 80
11–12 80 85

The PDF does not give full finished body or sleeve lengths. Its underarm length targets are measured before adding the ribbed hem and cuffs.

Yarn requirements

Use Chaska Wara DK/8ply, worked with a single strand. Approximate allowances below use 150 m per 50 g and cover one cardigan.

Age (years) One cardigan (m)
2 450
3–4 450

7–8 600

Tension

22 stitches and 26 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch on 4 mm needles. Wash and dry a swatch before measuring, and adjust needle size if needed to achieve the pattern tension.

Needles and notions

  • 3.25 mm and 4 mm circular needles with a 60 cm cord. Straight needles may be used instead; the garment is worked flat.
  • 5 buttons and 4 stitch markers.
  • 2 stitch holders or waste yarn for the sleeves.
  • Tapestry needle for the sleeve seams, underarms and ends.

Pattern clarification

Wild & Woolly clarification: finished chest measurements are 60, 65, 70, 75, 80 and 85 cm for ages 2, 3–4, 5–6, 7–8, 9–10 and 11–12 years respectively. This corrects the repeated values in the measurement table. The original PDF has not been amended.

Frequently asked questions

Is this cardigan seamless?

No. The yoke and body are worked together from the top down, but the sleeves are knitted flat and sewn underneath. The underarm gaps also need closing.

Can I choose which side has the buttonholes?

Yes. The pattern permits buttonholes on either front band; choose the placement before starting.

Do I need circular needles?

The materials list suggests circular needles with a 60 cm cord but explicitly permits straight needles. The body and sleeves are worked back and forth.
