Gauge, needles and materials
Gauge: 18 stitches × 24 rows in colourwork and stocking stitch on 4.5 mm needles = 10 × 10 cm.
Needles: 4 mm circulars: 40 and 80 or 100 cm; 4.5 mm circulars: 40, 60 and 80 or 100 cm; 4 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, unless using Magic Loop.
Designer difficulty: 4 out of 5. Preparation includes raglan increases, short rows, two-colour stranded knitting and working in the round.
Recommended shop yarn combination
Hold one strand of Sandnes Garn Double Sunday with one strand of Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair (2ply) in each colour. Choose a main-colour pair and a contrasting stripe-colour pair. This is our approved shop alternative, rather than an original designer yarn combination.
Estimated metres by size: each column gives a separate yarn and colour requirement. The Double Sunday estimate preserves the length of the designer’s Peer Gynt allowance, calculated at 91 m per 50 g. The mohair estimate preserves the length of the designer’s 175 m per 25 g companion option. These are equivalent-metre planning estimates, not test-knit substitute quantities; the two patterns have different allowances.
| Size | Double Sunday: main (m) | Tynn Silk Mohair: main (m) | Double Sunday: stripe (m) | Tynn Silk Mohair: stripe (m) |

Double Sunday contains approximately 108 m per 50 g; Tynn Silk Mohair approximately 212 m per 25 g. Do not transfer the original yarn weights directly to these substitutes or add the component columns into a single yarn quantity.
Wash and block a swatch with the two strands together, checking 18 stitches × 24 rows per 10 cm in both stocking stitch and colourwork. Check the fabric and drape before beginning; adjust needle size if needed. Actual use can vary. Allow extra for swatching, added length or changed stripes and round up when purchasing.
Frequently asked questions
How oversized is the adult Key Sweater?
The design allows approximately 25 cm of ease. In the designer’s example, an 86 cm bust is matched to size XS, with a finished circumference of 111 cm.
Are the stripes worked as ordinary one-colour bands?
The design uses a two-colour stranded stripe pattern. Check tension in the colourwork as well as in stocking stitch, and avoid pulling the floats tight.
Can I use the Key Sweater Man yarn setup for this version?
The versions have different gauges. This adult Key Sweater uses 18 stitches × 24 rows on 4.5 mm needles and a main yarn with a companion strand; Key Sweater Man uses a single strand at 20 stitches × 28 rows.
Does Double Sunday mean holding two strands of that yarn?
No. Double Sunday is the yarn’s name. For this shop combination, use one strand of Double Sunday with one strand of Tynn Silk Mohair, in both the main colour and the stripe colour.
