Dress with Heart Detail Hem – Naturally K3014
A sweet 8ply dress with a contrasting bodice detail and a heart-patterned hem. Three shades of New Zealand merino make the colourwork stand out, while the back-neck button opening helps with dressing.
Construction and pattern facts
Knitted from the top down. The raglan bodice begins in rows with a centre-back opening, then the body is joined to work the skirt in the round. Finish the short sleeves from held stitches, add the button and make its loop using the cast-on tail. Plain and striped sections use one strand at a time; the heart chart uses stranded colours worked separately, not held together.

Gauge
22 stitches × 30 rows over stocking stitch on 4.00 mm needles = 10 × 10 cm. Check a washed and blocked swatch, including your colourwork tension.
Needles and notions
- 3.25 mm and 4.00 mm circular needles with a 60 cm cord, or 40 cm for smaller sizes.
- 3.25 mm double-pointed needles for the sleeves, or suitable circular needles for magic loop.
- Four stitch markers, waste yarn to hold the sleeve stitches, one button and a tapestry needle.
Skill guidance
Intermediate: raglan increases, changing from rows to rounds, holding and picking up stitches, and reading a stranded colourwork chart. Read the full pattern before starting and leave the instructed cast-on tail for the button loop.
Frequently asked questions
Is the whole dress knitted in the round?
No. The bodice starts in rows to make the back-neck opening. The skirt is then joined and knitted in the round.
Are the listed lengths measured from the shoulder?
No. The leaflet’s dress lengths are measured from the underarm.
