Blocks and Stripes Baby Blanket – Naturally K3019

A colourful 8ply blanket combining plain blocks and striped sections, with raised joins giving the design extra texture. Choose four merino shades for a soft blanket with plenty of colour-play.

Construction and pattern facts

Knitted flat in strips, following the colour-placement diagram. Pick up stitches along neighbouring strip edges and join them with a three-needle cast-off, leaving the joining ridge visible on the right side. Finish the outside edges either all together or one side at a time, as described in the leaflet. Work one strand at a time, changing colours for the blocks and stripes; do not hold colours together.

Finished measurements

Approximately 80 × 100 cm after gentle blocking.

Yarn requirements

Use the original Naturally New Zealand Merino 8ply in four colours. Metres below are calculated at 138 m per 50 g. Colour 4 is also used for joining strips and finishing the edges; its allowance is included in the table. Quantities are approximate.

Finished size Colour 1 Colour 2 Colour 3 Colour 4
80 × 100 cm 276 m 276 m 276 m 276 m

Gauge

22 stitches × 30 rows over stocking stitch on 4.00 mm needles = 10 × 10 cm. Wash and block a swatch before checking tension.

Needles and notions

  • 4.00 mm needles for knitting the strips.
  • Two 3.25 mm circular needles with 100 cm cords for picking up the long edges, plus a working needle for the three-needle cast-off.
  • A tapestry needle.

Skill guidance

Intermediate: reading the colour schematic, changing colours, picking up long edges and making three-needle joins. Keep the joins and edge cast-offs comfortably loose, and gently block the finished blanket.

Frequently asked questions

Are the blocks knitted as separate squares?

No. Several blocks are knitted consecutively to make each strip; the completed strips are then joined.

Is there a sewn join between every strip?

No. The long edges are picked up and joined with a three-needle cast-off, which forms a visible ridge on the front.
