Jacket, Hat & Booties Knitting Pattern — Naturally K615
Kay Henry's baby jacket, hat and booties set includes separate 4ply and DK/8ply instructions. Garter-stitch borders and a simple stocking-stitch body give the jacket a neat, practical finish.
Construction and skill guidance
The jacket fronts, back and sleeves are worked flat and sewn together. The armholes have shallow shaping; the sleeves have straight tops sewn into the armholes. The sleeves can be textured with alternating garter and stocking stitch, or worked in stocking stitch as photographed. The hat and booties are knitted flat and seamed.
Confident beginner to intermediate — shaping, buttonholes, picking up a neckband and seaming.
Sizes and fit
Choose by measurements, as the leaflet sizes by chest measurement rather than age.
| To fit chest (cm) | Finished chest (cm) | Back length (cm) | Sleeve to underarm (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 35 | 40 | 22 | 10 |
| 40 | 45 | 25 | 14 |
| 45 | 50 | 29 | 16 |
| 50 | 55 | 33 | 19 |
Yarn requirements
Approved alternatives, used separately with one strand: Naturally New Zealand Merino 4ply (178 m per 50 g) for the 4ply instructions, or Naturally New Zealand Merino 8ply (138 m per 50 g) for the DK instructions.
| To fit chest (cm) | 4ply set (m) | DK/8ply set (m) |
|---|---|---|
| 35 | 445 | 276 |
| 40 | 534 | 414 |
| 45 | 623 | 552 |
| 50 | 712 | 552 |
These equivalent-metre estimates are based on the original Classic 4ply allowances at 89 m per 25 g and Classic Prints DK allowances at 138 m per 50 g. Each column covers the complete set. Choose one yarn weight and follow its instructions throughout; do not combine the columns. Allow extra for swatching.
Gauge
4ply: 28 stitches and 36 rows to 10 cm on 3.25 mm needles. DK/8ply: 24 stitches and 32 rows to 10 cm on 3.75 mm needles. Both are measured in stocking stitch. The DK pattern gauge is tighter than NZ Merino 8ply's standard label gauge of 22 stitches and 30 rows.
Check a washed and blocked swatch before beginning, adjust needle size to match both stitch and row gauge, and check the fabric suits your project. Replacement yarn allowances are estimates, not a guarantee of identical fabric or consumption.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use either yarn weight with the same instructions?
Use the dedicated 4ply or DK/8ply section. The stitch counts and gauge differ, so do not switch between sections.
Are the sleeves raglan?
No. The sleeves have straight tops sewn into shallow armholes.
