Paintbox Baby Blanket Knit Kit

A colourful mitred-square blanket in Amano Duna, a soft blend of 60% organic cotton and 40% alpaca. Choose Duna Bright Mosaic for the original vivid blue, pink and golden colourway, or Duna Soft Pastels for the gentle pink, lilac, blue, mint, yellow and cream colourway shown in the new photos. Both Duna choices follow Naturally K3057, Mitred Square Pram Coverlet & Snuggle Doll.

Lights option: This existing option uses NZ Merino 4ply and the separate K3002 Paintbox Baby Pram Coverlet with Beanie pattern. The Duna shade chart and K3057 details below apply to the two Duna colourways.

About the pattern

The blanket is worked flat with one strand of 4ply yarn. Seven squares across and eight rows of squares create a 56-block panel. Squares are joined as you knit by picking up stitches from completed squares. Follow the pattern chart for the colour placement and decrease-line direction. The striped border is worked along each edge separately, then the border corners are sewn together.

Techniques include garter stitch, picking up stitches, paired decreases and changing colours. A circular needle accommodates the border stitches; the blanket is not knitted in the round.

Finished measurements

Blanket: approximately 80 × 90 cm at the pattern tension.
Optional snuggle doll: approximately 25 cm tall. Doll instructions are included in K3057; additional materials may be needed.

Duna yarn requirements and colourways

Amano Duna has 200 metres per 50 g hank. Each Duna blanket requires 1,600 metres in total. Work with one strand throughout. Duna Bright Mosaic uses the original shades; Duna Soft Pastels uses the corresponding new shades. Use the shades for your chosen colourway wherever that colour role appears in the block chart and border sequence in the insert.

Begin with CC2 at the bottom-right corner of the chart. Follow the chart for all subsequent squares. The border colour order is CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, CC5, CC6, then CC7. Yarn quantities are approximate and depend on tension.

Tension

26 stitches × 38 rows = 10 cm on 3.25 mm needles, as stated in K3057. Check your tension before starting and adjust needle size if necessary. The finished size depends on achieving the pattern tension.

Needles and notions

Blanket: 3.25 mm straight needles and a 3.25 mm circular needle with an 80 cm cord; a stitch marker and a tapestry needle for finishing.

The “With Needles” option includes a 3.25 mm blanket needle. Needles are not included with the “Without Needles” option. Use a 3.25 mm circular needle with an 80 cm cord for the border, as specified in K3057.

Needles are excluded from the “Without Needles” option. Doll stuffing and embroidery thread are additional materials.

Optional snuggle doll

The pattern also includes a doll worked in the round, using 2.25 mm double-pointed needles or a circular needle for Magic Loop, with additional pieces worked and attached separately. You will need polyester toy stuffing and a small amount of black thread for the eyes.

These doll quantities are separate from the blanket requirements. K3057 advises weighing leftover yarn before beginning the doll; extra yarn may be needed, particularly in colours other than original shade 2604.

Care

Follow the care instructions on your Duna yarn label and reshape the finished blanket to its measurements when drying.
