Knit a textured scarf with a repeating fan motif and button fastening. Designed by Margret Botha, the scarf is worked flat in African Expressions Adore, a soft 14ply blend of merino wool and kid mohair.

Confident Beginner. This scarf is knitted flat using knit and purl stitches, a repeated fan pattern with yarn-forward increases and decreases, a buttonhole and a sewn-on button.

What’s in your kit

Choose the With option if you want a pair of 7 mm knitting needles included; the Without option supplies yarn and pattern only. You will also need a button and a tapestry needle for finishing. The button and tapestry needle are not listed as kit contents.

Size and yarn

The pattern gives one size, approximately 22 cm wide and 100 cm long. It uses one strand of Adore throughout. The pattern’s material requirement is two 100 g balls, supplied as 240 metres in the kit.

Gauge, needles and construction

18 stitches and 16 rows = 10 × 10 cm over the pattern’s stocking stitch tension on 7 mm needles. Make a tension square and adjust the needles if needed.

The scarf is knitted flat. The four-row fan pattern creates the texture; the pattern adds a buttonhole near the end, then the button is sewn on for a loop fastening. Follow the enclosed pattern for the complete stitch and row instructions.

Care

Adore is 80% merino wool and 20% kid mohair. Hand wash gently according to the yarn label and reshape flat to dry.

Will I be able to knit this scarf?

A good next project after a plain scarf if you're comfortable knitting and purling and are ready to follow a repeated four-row pattern. You'll practise forming the fan texture and making a buttonhole. It is worked flat on ordinary knitting needles, not in the round. Remember: you'll need to supply a button and tapestry needle for finishing.
