AWAQ Poncho Knit Kit
AWAQ Poncho Knit Kit
Knit an open lace poncho in Amano Awa 8ply. Designed by Martha Wissing, AWAQ starts as one flat rectangle with a seed-stitch edge. Wet blocking opens the lace before the piece is seamed into its finished shape.
Skill level and techniques
Intermediate. The lace pattern repeats over 16 rows, and the project requires careful wet blocking and seaming a flat rectangle into a poncho.
Project details
One size; approximately 41 cm by 127 cm after wet blocking. The lace section repeats a 16-row pattern between the border stitches. Follow the included pattern and schematic when joining the rectangle.
Yarn included
| Size | Yarn | Strands | Metres supplied |
|---|---|---|---|
| One size | Amano Awa 8ply | One | 600 m |
The kit includes two 300 m hanks of Amano Awa in your selected shade. The yarn is 55% baby alpaca, 26% merino wool and 19% Pima cotton. The original pattern also specifies two hanks of Awa.
Tension and tools
After blocking, target gauge is 16 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm in the lace pattern, or 24 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch. Use 4 mm straight or circular needles, or the size needed to match gauge. You will need stitch markers, removable markers or pins for assembly, and a tapestry needle. Needles are not included.
