Gauge, needles and accessories
Gauge: 20 stitches × 28 rows in stocking stitch, after washing and blocking = 10 × 10 cm. Wash and block a swatch before starting, and adjust needle size to achieve the pattern gauge.
Needles: 4 mm circular needles (40, 80 and 100 cm); 3 mm circular needles (40 cm); 3.5 mm and 4 mm double-pointed needles.
Wild & Woolly yarn options
Choose one of these shop-approved alternatives. Make a washed and blocked swatch with your chosen option and match the pattern gauge of 20 stitches × 28 rows per 10 cm. The two options give different fabrics; check the drape as well as the gauge.
Option 1: Sunday with a 2ply mohair
Hold one strand of Sandnes Garn Sunday together with one strand of Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair throughout.
You can use another suitable 2ply mohair companion, such as Naturally Pacific Lace 2ply, African Expressions Hope 2ply Mohair or Sesia Vivienne 2ply Silk Mohair. Choose one mohair, check its metres per sale unit and swatch it with Sunday.

Estimated metre allowances: These are equivalent-metre estimates for the standard 130 cm dress, not confirmed designer consumption for the substitutes. The main-yarn metres are converted from the designer’s allowance at 400 metres per 100 g; the mohair metres use 210 metres per 25 g. For Double Sunday, use the main-yarn metres only, rather than adding the two strand lengths.
Sunday supplies 235 metres per 50 g and Double Sunday 108 metres per 50 g. Tynn Silk Mohair and Hope supply 212 metres per 25 g, Pacific Lace 200 metres per 25 g, and Vivienne 210 metres per 25 g. Round each yarn up to whole sale units and allow for swatching. A longer dress needs additional yarn.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Chestnut Dress length include its turtleneck?
No. The listed length is measured down the middle of the back excluding the collar. Account for this when deciding where you want the dress hem to sit.
What creates the Chestnut Dress shoulder shape?
Short rows shape the shoulders before the front and back are joined for the body. The sleeves are worked from picked-up armhole stitches, and the turtleneck is added last.
