Gauge, needles and accessories
Gauge: 17 stitches × 26 rows in stocking stitch on 4.5 mm needles = 10 × 10 cm. Wash and block a swatch before starting, and adjust needle size to achieve the pattern gauge.
Needles: 4.5 mm circular needles (40, 60, 80 and/or 100 cm).
Wild & Woolly yarn options
Choose one of these shop-approved single-strand alternatives:
- Chaska Alpaca Air 12ply — brushed baby alpaca and acrylic.
- New Zealand Merino 12ply — merino wool.
- Inca Spun Alpaca Wool Mix Worsted — alpaca and wool.
Use one strand of your chosen yarn on its own, without a mohair companion. These replace the designer’s held-together combination and will create different fabrics. Wash and block a swatch and match 17 stitches × 26 rows per 10 cm, adjusting needle size as needed. Check that the resulting fabric has the drape and feel you want for this roomy sweater.
Estimated yarn requirements
The following single-strand metre allowances apply to any of the three shop options.

These are equivalent-metre estimates based on the designer’s main-yarn allowance at 110 metres per 50 g, not confirmed consumption for the substitutes. The original companion-yarn metres are not added to this single-strand estimate. Chaska Alpaca Air and Inca Spun Alpaca Wool Mix Worsted each supply 100 metres per 50 g; New Zealand Merino 12ply supplies approximately 104 metres per 50 g. Round up to whole sale units when purchasing and allow for swatching or extra length.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Cloud Sweater built with a conventional raglan yoke?
No. Short rows shape the back yoke and shoulders, then the front and back are joined at the underarms. Sleeves are picked up around the armholes, and the funnel neck is added last.
Does every Cloud Sweater size have 25 cm of positive ease?
No. PetiteKnit specifies approximately 25 cm in the smaller sizes, with gradually less ease in the larger sizes. Compare your own bust with the finished measurements for the size you are considering.
