Two Tone V Neck Cardigan Knitting Pattern — Naturally K656
Kay Henry's 4ply baby cardigan pairs two colours in a slipped-stitch stripe pattern, with ribbed trims and a V neckline. Choose contrasting shades to make the bands and stripes stand out.
Construction and skill guidance
The back, fronts and sleeves are knitted flat separately. The sleeves have straight tops sewn into the armholes. The ribbed front and neckband is picked up after joining the shoulders, with buttonholes worked into the band.
Intermediate — slipped stitches, colour changes, V-neck shaping, picking up stitches, buttonholes and seaming.
Sizes and fit
Choose by measurements, as the leaflet sizes by chest measurement rather than age.
| To fit chest (cm) | Finished chest (cm) | Back length (cm) | Sleeve to underarm (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 | 45 | 25 | 13 |
| 45 | 50 | 28 | 18 |
| 50 | 55 | 32 | 19 |
| 55 | 60 | 36 | 21 |
Yarn requirements
Naturally Baby Haven 4ply (178 m per 50 g), as listed in the original pattern and the existing product description. Choose two colours; use one strand and work one colour at a time.
| To fit chest (cm) | Main/light colour (m) | Contrast/dark colour (m) |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | 356 | 178 |
| 45 | 356 | 178 |
| 50 | 356 | 178 |
| 55 | 534 | 178 |
Approximate allowances are converted from the leaflet's Haven/Baby Haven 4ply quantities at 178 m per 50 g. The main colour forms the wider stocking-stitch stripes and upper body; the contrast forms the ribbing, bands and narrow stripes. Allow extra for swatching.
Gauge
28 stitches and 36 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 3.25 mm needles.
Check a washed and blocked swatch before beginning, adjust needle size to match both stitch and row gauge, and check the fabric suits your project. Yarn allowances are approximate; gauge and finished measurements determine the fit.
Needles and notions
- 3.25 mm knitting needles
- Stitch holders, markers and a yarn needle
- Four buttons for 40 and 45 cm chest; five for 50 cm; six for 55 cm

Frequently asked questions
Are both colours held together?
No. Use one colour at a time for the slipped-stitch stripes; the pattern carries the unused yarn up the side.
How should I choose a size?
Use the child's chest measurement. The PDF gives four chest sizes rather than an age for each size, with 5 cm difference between to-fit and finished chest measurements.
