Temperature Blanket 2025 Crochet Starter Kit

Turn 2025's weather into a colourful keepsake in warm Harmony merino. Choose your region, then work a stripe for each week's average maximum temperature. This is a starter kit with the printed pattern and regional yarn selection for the first five weeks; you will need more yarn to complete the blanket.

How the project works

Crochet back and forth in rows, building a chevron fabric with a repeating two-row sequence. This is one continuous blanket, rather than separate blocks. The pattern uses US double crochet, equivalent to NZ/UK treble crochet. Work one repeat for each of the pattern's 52 weeks, changing colour according to the temperature guide. Consecutive weeks may use the same shade.

Who this project suits

Best for crocheters who can already work chains and US double crochet, count stitches, follow a repeat and change colours. You will practise turning chains, skipped stitches and increases that form the chevrons.

Kit contents

Regional yarn quantities

Harmony is 100% merino wool, with approximately 87 metres per 50 g ball, worked with one strand. These are the yarn quantities supplied in both tool options for each region.

Region Harmony supplied Shade quantities in metres
Auckland 348 metres 2044: 174 m; 2552: 174 m
Wellington 348 metres 2044: 87 m; 2018: 174 m; 2298: 87 m
Christchurch 348 metres 2095: 87 m; 2018: 174 m; 2044: 87 m
Dunedin 435 metres 2018: 174 m; 2298: 261 m
Napier 348 metres 2044: 87 m; 2298: 174 m; 2552: 87 m
Hokitika 348 metres 2044: 261 m; 2298: 87 m

These amounts are for starting the project. Total yarn for the finished blanket depends on the temperature colours, your tension and any changes to the pattern. Additional Harmony yarn is purchased separately; colour availability and dye lots can vary.

Tools, size and tension

You need a 5 mm crochet hook. Choose With to include it, or Without if you have your own. A yarn needle for weaving in ends is required separately. The original pattern does not specify a finished blanket size or project gauge. Work a swatch to assess your fabric; finished dimensions will depend on your tension.

2025 temperature records

This is the 2025 edition. Our 2025 crochet-along article contains regional temperature records to help you plan your colours. For another year or location, record your own weekly averages and adapt the guide. The starter shades are selected for the named region's start to 2025.

Care

Follow the Harmony ball-band care instructions and dry the blanket flat, supporting its weight when wet. Keep spare yarn and your temperature notes together for future repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Does this kit contain yarn for the whole blanket?

No. It supplies regional starter yarn for the first five weeks: 348 metres for Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Napier or Hokitika, and 435 metres for Dunedin. Buy additional yarn as your colour plan develops.

What do With and Without mean?

With includes a 5 mm KnitPro Waves hook. Without excludes the hook. Both options include the regional yarn, printed pattern and split-ring markers.

Are these US or NZ crochet instructions?

The printed pattern uses US terms. Its double crochet is NZ/UK treble crochet. Work in rows and turn at each end.

Can I use this kit for a different year or region?

You can adapt the temperature guide, but this printed edition and starter yarn selection are based on 2025. A different location or year may require different shades and quantities.

How large will the blanket be?

The source pattern gives no fixed finished dimensions or project gauge. Your tension and any changes to the row or stitch count affect the final size.
