Bloomers and Shorts Knitting Pattern – K428
Two practical baby knits in one pattern: bloomers with ribbed leg openings and shorts with a little extra leg length. Both have a folded rib waistband enclosing elastic.
Pattern Format: 📥📬 Available as Digital Download or Printed Copy (choose option below). This is a Naturally knitting pattern; yarn, needles and the finished item are not included.
Construction and Skill Guidance
Work front and back sections flat, with shaping for the crotch and leg openings, then sew the seams. The shorts legs are worked separately before joining into each body section. The bloomers have picked-up leg bands; both versions have elastic threaded into the folded waistband.
Suggested skill level: Intermediate. You’ll use increases and decreases, ribbing, held stitches, picking up stitches and seaming.
Sizing and Measurements
Four baby sizes from newborn to approximately 12–18 months. Chest measurements are the leaflet’s size references, not waist measurements.
| Size | Newborn | 3 months | 6–9 months | 12–18 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pattern chest size reference (cm) | 36 | 41 | 46 | 51 |
| Finished waist (cm) | 39 | 44 | 50 | 55 |
| Length from crotch (cm) | 13 | 14 | 17 | 18 |
| Shorts leg length (cm) | 3.5 | 3.5 | 5 | 5 |
Yarn Requirements
The original yarn is Sesia Mistral Baby Print 4ply, approximately 175 m per 50 g. Sample shades are #65 for the shorts and #485 for the bloomers. The quantities below are separate allowances for each garment.
| Size | Newborn | 3 months | 6–9 months | 12–18 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shorts (m) | 175 | 350 | 350 | 525 |
| Bloomers (m) | 175 | 175 | 350 | 350 |
Work with a single strand. Metreages are approximate yarn allowances converted from the original pattern quantities, rather than measured consumption. Allow extra for swatching or changes in size. Check a washed and dried swatch before starting.
For colour consistency with printed yarn, start each new ball from the same end. The colour pattern varies with size.
