Grandpa Love Baby Vest Knitting Pattern — Naturally K3003

A top-down baby vest with broken-rib texture, contrasting colour bands and a small buttoned opening at the neck. An extra layer for little ones from newborn to approximately two years.

Construction and skill guidance

The neck and upper yoke are worked flat, with short-row neck shaping, raglan increases and a button placket. Sleeve stitches are held aside, the placket is overlapped and joined, and the body continues in the round. The short sleeve edges are finished in the round on double-pointed needles. Intermediate: short rows, raglan increases, buttonholes, changing between flat and circular knitting and picking up underarm stitches.

Sizes and measurements

Size Body length from initial cast-on (cm) Buttons
0–3 months 26 3
6–9 months 29 4
12–18 months 32 4
24 months 35 4

Lengths come from the knitting instructions. The leaflet gives age sizes but does not state body chest measurements or finished chest circumferences; these have not been estimated.

Yarn requirements

The original recommended Sesia Mistral 4ply merino provides approximately 175 m per 50 g. Work with one strand, changing between main and contrast colours.

Size Main colour (m) Contrast colour (m)
0–3 months 175 175
6–9 months 350 175
12–18 months 350 175
24 months 525 350

Approximate allowances for one vest, converted from the leaflet’s quantities at the verified 175 m per 50 g. Keep the colour allowances separate and allow extra for swatching or alterations.

Gauge and preparation

30 stitches and 40 rows measure 10 × 10 cm in broken rib on 3.25 mm needles.

Make a washed and blocked swatch before starting. Adjust needle size to match both stitch and row gauge, and allow extra yarn for swatching.

Frequently asked questions

Is the whole vest knitted in the round?

No. The neck and upper yoke are worked flat to create the buttoned opening. The body and short sleeve edges are then worked in the round.

Can I combine the two yarn colour allowances?

No. The main and contrast colours have separate requirements, including different allowances in the larger sizes.
