Raglan Cardigan & Hat – Naturally K3053

A cotton baby cardigan with ribbed edges, a garter-stitch finish around the upper yoke and a matching rib-edged hat. The sleeves are knitted flat first and held aside. The cardigan body is worked flat in one piece to the underarms, then joined to the sleeves so the raglan yoke can be worked together. The hat is knitted flat and sewn along the back seam.

Tension

28 stitches × 36 rows over 10 cm in stocking stitch on 3.25 mm needles. Make a washed and dried swatch before measuring and adjust needle size to achieve the stated tension.

Needles and notions

  • 2.75 mm and 3.25 mm knitting needles.
  • Stitch holders, stitch markers and a tapestry needle.
  • Five buttons for newborn and 3 months; six buttons for 6–9 and 12–18 months.

Skills and preparation

An intermediate project using ribbing, stocking stitch, increases, raglan decreases, garter stitch, picking up stitches, buttonholes and seaming. Keep track of the four raglan markers after joining the sleeves to the body.

Approved sleeve-rib correction

After the first two sleeve rib rows, work 6, 6, 6 or 8 additional rib rows for newborn, 3 months, 6–9 months or 12–18 months respectively. This gives 8, 8, 8 or 10 sleeve rib rows in total. This Wild & Woolly-approved correction replaces the six-value sequence printed for the four sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Are the raglan seams sewn together?

The sleeves and body join on the needles before the raglan yoke is worked, so the raglan lines are knitted together. The sleeve and underarm seams still need finishing.

Can I choose which front has the buttonholes?

Yes. The pattern gives front-band placement for either side.
