Vintage Merino Baby Blanket Knit Kit
Vintage Merino Baby Blanket Knit Kit
A soft merino baby blanket with textured geometric panels, moss-stitch borders and optional lazy-daisy flowers. Inspired by stitch detail from an early 1950s Patons & Baldwin design, it makes a thoughtful handmade baby gift or family keepsake.
Skill level and construction
Confident Beginner: be comfortable with knit, purl, casting on and casting off. You will practise yarn-forward eyelets, knit-two-together decreases and keeping track of textured pattern rows. Knit flat with the borders worked as part of the blanket; weave in the ends and block gently. Lazy-daisy embroidery is an optional finishing step.
Finished measurements
Approximately 58 cm wide × 84 cm long. Tension and finishing affect the final size.
Yarn and kit contents
- 5 × 50 g balls of New Zealand Merino 4ply in your selected main colour: approximately 178 m per ball, 890 m total. Work with one strand throughout.
- One printed Vintage Merino Baby Blanket pattern.
- Contrasting embroidery yarn and an embroidery needle for the optional lazy-daisy flowers.
- The “With” needle option adds a pair of 3.25 mm, 35 cm bamboo needles. The “Without” option does not include knitting needles.
The yarn is 100% New Zealand merino, grown and spun locally, with clear stitch definition and soft, lightweight warmth.
Needles, tension and embroidery
Use 3.25 mm needles, or the size needed to obtain approximately 28 stitches per 10 cm. The pattern does not specify a row gauge. Make a tension square before starting.
Contrasting embroidery yarn and an embroidery needle are included in every kit for the optional lazy-daisy flowers.
Care
The merino is machine washable; follow the current ball-band settings, including any contrast yarn’s care instructions. Reshape and dry flat. For finishing advice, read our wet-blocking guide and handle the blanket gently.
