Baby Hooded Sweater Knitting Pattern — Naturally K685
A cosy baby sweater with a hood, a small buttoned front opening and textured bands of stocking stitch and garter stitch. Choose a printed merino colourway or a solid shade to suit your little one.
Construction and skill guidance
Knitted flat in separate back, front and sleeve pieces, with shaped armholes and set-in sleeves. The hood is picked up around the neck, worked in two halves and seamed. Intermediate: shaping while keeping the texture correct, picking up stitches, a buttonhole and seaming.

Approved yarn choices and requirements
Naturally New Zealand Merino 8ply Prints or solid New Zealand Merino 8ply, each approximately 138 m per 50 g. Choose one range and work with one strand.
| Size | Either approved yarn (m) |
|---|---|
| Newborn | 315 |
| 3 months | 420 |
| 6–9 months | 525 |
| 12–18 months | 525 |
These are equivalent-metre estimates: the leaflet’s yarn quantities were converted at 105 m per 50 g, then carried across to the approved replacement. Different yarns can use different amounts; buy enough metres, round up to whole sale units and check the washed and blocked swatch.
Gauge and preparation
22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 4.00 mm needles. The gauge reference is stocking stitch, although the sweater includes garter stitch texture.
Make a washed and blocked swatch before starting, adjust needle size to match both stitch and row gauge, and allow extra yarn for swatching.
Needles and notions
- 3.75 mm and 4.00 mm straight needles
- One button and a stitch holder
- A yarn needle for seaming
Pattern format
A printed pattern, posted to you. This purchase is for the pattern only; yarn, needles and notions are purchased separately.
Frequently asked questions
Are the textured bands made by changing colour?
No. The texture alternates stocking stitch and garter stitch. Any colour changes come from your chosen yarn.
Is the hood knitted separately?
It is picked up around the neck and worked in two halves, then seamed.
